Bought a DIY assembly toy elevator the other day and just when my grandnephew has finished assembling it, there was news of a hotel in Kuala Lumpur which has designated a non-halal lift specially to carry non-halal goods. The hotel stated that a non-halal signage put up there was required by the authorities. Jakim, the Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia however stated that hotels are not required to put up such signage though they can establish any appropriate mechanism in accordance with the procedures set to maintain the integrity of Malaysia’s Halal Certification. Suppose the hotel wasn't wrong. Halal by the way is Arabic for permissible. When it comes to food, it has to adhere to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. Most of the time, we tend to associate halal with food.
