Dead Man Passing

On Dec 12, 1948, when British was colonising Malaya, 24 unarmed people were shot dead by 14 Scots Guards . It was during the communist insurgency and the men were suspected to be guerillas when they were just villagers, out to gather fruits. The then Malayan attorney-general vindicated the troop for what is now known as the Batang Kali massacre and the incident was forgotten until 1970 when a British newspaper ran the story, publishing sworn affidavits by soldiers who admitted the villagers were shot in cold blood. In 1993, in Malaya, now Malaysia, MCA Legal Bureau representative Vincent Lim helped Tham Yong, a survivor of the incident and the relatives of other victims of the Batang Kali massacre to lodge reports on the gruesome killings at the Batang Kali police station (inset). On Friday, 2 April, 2010, Tham Yong passed away of cancer and with the passing of this last Malaysian witness, the campaign for an official investigation becomes uncertain. It is a good thing there is Hell!
