The report that some scientists have managed to induce virgin birth in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster may excite some. While artificial insemination and
birth without fertilization called parthenogenesis which occurs naturally in some plants and animal species have been referred to as virgin birth, the original virgin birth of Jesus by his mother, Mary raises questions. Scientists in the Drosophila melanogaster case have identified a genetic cause of virgin birth which once activated is inherited by subsequent generations of females. These females have an option to reproduce sexually if there are males around, or by virgin birth if there aren’t. In the case of human, one would wonder why the phenomena stops at Mary.
