Just the other day, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council won an appeal to reinstate a 37-year-old woman as a Muslim. The woman was born into the Hindu faith but was when a child, converted to Islam by her mother uniliterally. However, her mother and new father allowed her to continue practising Hinduism. The High Court had declared her a non-Muslim but now that the decision has been reversed, an Islamic human rights group decries that it is contrary to a verse in the Quran that states that there is no compulsion in religion. Besides, the Federal Court rules that the conversion of a minor requires the consent of both parents. Do you perhaps think that professing a religion is something personal?
