Kolam, a form of drawing using rice flour, chalk, chalk powder or rock powder which are either naturally or synthetically coloured, made its appearance in some shopping malls in Taiping and most certainly elsewhere in Malaysia now that Diwali is in the corner. Kolam is not merely to decorate. It is to invite Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity and wealth to the house. In ancient time, when it was drawn in coarse rice flour, it was to invite the ants, birds and other small creatures to eat it, thus welcoming other beings into one's home and to pay tribute to a harmonious co-existence.
