A Traveller's Tale: Visiting a Charcoal Factory

If you think you are going to start for home once you hit Kuala Sepetang, then think again. Maybe, you'd just want to hang around in the town for some new experience like visiting a charcoal factory for instance. It is not that you can see a charcoal kiln churning out charcoal everywhere in Malaysia. Chinese have started to make lump charcoal out of the mangrove trees in Kuala Sepetang since time immemorial and today, the charcoal they make are even exported to faraway places like Japan. Our guide did not just explain to us how charcoal are made but he lamented that locals today use gas to cook nowadays. They do not value the humble charcoal like the Japanese did, he said. One never values what one has!
Can you spot a charcoal kiln?

i suppose you're right. If people have a use for the trees, they will take care of it. As it is, the mangrove swamps here are well taken care of, in fact, they said, it is the best kept in the world. They do replant new trees too.
