Short Takes: Guavas in Varanasi

Guavas, these plants from the myrtle family, Myrtaceae surprised me when I was there at the Railway Station in Varanasi, India. The fruits sold there were yellow and yes, they were really different from the one we had back home in Malaysia. Back home, I used to pick and chomp guava out of the trees but these guavas were normally green even when ripe and the ripe flesh beneath the green skin where the seeds were many, was red. Nobody here that I know of take yellow guavas and usually, these were overripe fruits and often were infested with worms. But then of course, one never knows what to expect from this wonderful world. As it is, there are about 100 species of guavas worldwide. That's something to shout about for a native from Mexico, Central America, northern South America and parts of the Caribean and North Africa!

I am not used to eating yellow guavas. Over here, yellow guavas are over ripe guavas and have worms in it.
