We Did Nothing

I remember Hong Kong film director Ann Hui's award winning movie Boat People starring George Lam, Andy Hui and Cora Miao in the 80s. The movie is ranked 8th in the list of 103 best Chinese-language films in the past 100 years. The term Boat People itself must have been coined in the 70s. Back then, following the Vietnam War, many Vietnamese fled Communist-controlled Vietnam. Many paid with gold to travel in old and crudely made boats overcrowded with men, women, children and babies. The term Boat People therefore refers to illegal immigrants or asylum seekers emigrating en masse in boats. Now, who on earth of the right mind would leave their homeland and risk lives and limb to travel in such perilous journeys? The Boat People were often at the peril of pirates and even guards at the refugee camps they ended up in. Who on earth of the right mind would put them in peril? Perhaps, you are tempted to say it's you and me. WE DID NOTHING. PERIOD.
