A Traveller's Tale: The King of Fruit

Barely had we walked an hour up the tarred road when we came across a little makeshift stall selling durians. Durian, the spiky, football-sized fruit of South East Asia, is often pissed off by Westerners because of its unique odor. The fruit had only been known to them less than 1000 years, 600 years according to Wikipedia and the British naturalists Alfred Russel Wallace described its flesh as a rich custard highly flavoured with almonds. Asians who knew the fruit earlier and longer, however, revered it as the king of fruit and the fruit is very much sought after. My friends and I decided to buy one and we had a delightful time devouring it! A lady there had then told us that it would be a long walk up to the peak and it would probably be nightfall when we reached there. We decided then to take a van up Gunung Jerai. It cost us RM 10 per person. In life, I suppose you pick up delightful things on the way!

The Durian? It is a seasonal fruit. Presently, it is in season. Lots of it to go around. The people here love it. Even the squirrels. They will make a hole through the thick spiky skin and steal some of the yummy flesh inside.
