Dogfights and Cockfights

One of U.S. football's brightest star, Michael Vick had been indicted by the federal prosecutors for dogfighting. He had been criticized as a thug by the media. Dogfighting though an illegal sport had drawn fans who held secret matches just for the mere exhilaration of seeing two animals tear at each other with their powerful jaws. The fans supposedly loved their dogs but wanted to satisfy a competitive urge in themselves to prove which of two dogs will prove the tougher in combat. I bet that must be true about cockfights fans, too.
